Answer: My friend tried that-- basic calls worked, more or less, with tolerable but lacking reception. T-Mobile wouldn't allow her phone to connect to the mobile web, text messaging, etc. Voice mail notifications were equally screwey/delayed. It's far easier and more reliable to get a US phone for use in the US.
