I Need A Rebuttal For This Anti Gay Marriage Argument?
From Civic Participation Forum:I need a rebuttal for this anti gay marriage argument? The anti gay marriage argument is that is gays are allowed to marry to institution of marriage will fall down a slippery slope soon allowing bestiality and polygamy to be legalized, therefore gay marriage should be outlawed. I need a rebuttal for this argument. Thanks!
Answer: Ask them to substantiate the claim. How EXACTLY does allowing two people to be married result in people f*ing animals. They won't be able to answer the question. In my experience they will simply re-assert the claim...possibly louder. There is no slippery slope here. The difference of course is that gay relations are between consenting adults. Bestiality involves an animal, and animals are not sentient and capable of granting consent. Polygamy is outlawed because it is exploitative in nature, often involving underage brides, but also because it has bad societal effects...creating what sociologists call the rogue male problem.

What about... places where marriages are illegal, but civil unions are still allowed instead? What's the difference? Anti-gay marriage quotes? (Shoot the quotes down, of course.) Challenges faced by couples who cannot marry? How marriage is administered by the state, but it's the religious groups that oppose it most strongly, as if THEY control the institution of marriage instead.

Homophobes? I Have A Question For You And Anyone Else Who Dislikes Gays?
From Polls & Surveys Forum:Homophobes? I have a question for you and anyone else who dislikes gays? why do you dislike them? What are your reasons for not wanting same sex marriage? Some responses to anti-gay marriage arguments: One of the first claims that seems to come up when gay marriage is discussed is that homosexual relations/relationships are not biologically natural. Same-sex couples cannot naturally produce children through their union. "Consider this. If there is a necessary link between marriage and procreation, strange consequences would follow. A state could and, to be consistent, should prohibit marriage in which one or both partners are sterile or impotent. If procreation is the essential goal of marriage, why should postmenopausal women be allowed to marry? Surely, discrimination against sterile, impotent, or aged couples would be unacceptable to citizens of many different perspectives. The rationale would be that marriage serves functions that are as important as, if not more important than, procreation, including interpersonal commitment, religious or moral expression, sexual satisfaction, and the legal entitlements associated with spouse hood. If elderly, sterile, or impotent couples cannot be denied the right to marry because of a traditional link between marriage and procreation, neither can lesbian or gay couples be denied the right for that type of reason." Also.... There has never been any evidence that children of gay couples (either biological or adopted) are harmed by their environment. In many cases these children seem to be more well adjusted than their "normally" raised counterparts. From T. Richard Sullivan, PhD affiliated with the School of Social Work, University of British Columbia, and Albert Ba ques, social worker with the B.C. Ministry for Children and Families, 1999 we learn that “The assumption that a gay and lesbian orientation is anathema to child rearing reflects homophobia and the idealization of a particular family structure that is assumed to be morally superior…[In fact though, research shows that]no differences in well-being and normative functioning have been found between children reared by heterosexuals and those raised by lesbian or gay parents. 'The fear that children raised by homosexuals will grow up to be lesbian or gay suggests that it would be awful if that were the case. In order to prove that they a
Answer: I actually did a survey of my town about why people dislike homosexuals because I had to do a speech supporting legalizing gay marriage and the most common reasons I got weren't really reasons at all. People would just say it's 'weird' or 'gross', and I think the reason they think so is purely because they aren't used to it. Some did argue that it goes against all religions, but I thought that wasn't really a valid argument seeing as not many countries, if any, in the western world even have a national religion of any sort. Also people believe that gay couples shouldn't have children because children need both a mother and a father, but then what about single parents? Are we just going to take their children away from them? It's a bit stupid really when you think about how we're all growing and developing, learning to accept all people whether they're black, white, Asian or anything else, but some people can't accept those who just might be attracted to the same sex.
How Long Until Women Sue To Have Urinals Removed From Bathrooms, Since They Cant Exactly Pee?
From Politics Forum:how long until women sue to have Urinals removed from bathrooms, since they cant exactly pee? Standing up, and its unfair to them that they don't have the same rights as everyone else? Isn't that the gay marriage argument? WOW thank you for Proving my point nicely Blimpo! They DO NT HAVE to get married, they have civil unions, but they dint want em. FAIL Did you have to think all night to come up WI that, or does empty thought just come naturally?
Answer: LIL I will have to go find one tomorrow and start the proceedings! Actually this is a good political idea. I will give it some thought while I find a bathroom like that. Hey guys unisex just went to all stalls with FULL toilette's. LOL Please be a sweetie and LIFT the sea tie. Blimpo,, yes we can stand and have it run down our legs. This is why we squat in public bathrooms. Never sit down. Nasty. Your woman must smell good.
Why Do Gay People Want To Get Married?
From Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Forum:Why do gay people want to get married? It doesn't make sense to me why would you want to be recognized in the eyes of a religion that hates who you are so badly. Before any one says anything like it I'm not anti gay or any thing I'm bisexual and love and except my sexuality. It's just the entire gay marriage argument that gets me. I mean what is marriage but a way of showing just how committed you are to your partner in the eyes of the god of your respective religion, and I don't think we need any ones permission to do that. where do you stand on it.
Answer: Same-sex couples are not asking to be recognized in the eyes of a religion, but recognized in the eyes of the law. According to the General Accounting Office of the United States, there are 1,049 benefits, rights, and privileges only offered through legal marriage.
If Marriage Is "Religious", As Homophobes Claim...Does That Mean Atheists Cannot Get Married As Well?
From Religion & Spirituality Forum:If marriage is "religious", as homophobes claim...does that mean atheists cannot get married as well? Anti-gay marriage arguments always include the notion that marriage is a "religious institution".If that was true, are atheists also banned from getting marriage licenses down at city hall? And if that is true, then the government has no business handing out marriage licenses, and should revoke all the ones they have issued - including those of the religious, straight variety. That would also eliminate all "marriage rights" claimed by these same couples, since, after all, marriage is a "religious" affair. Fair is fair.
Answer: Actually, that argument is backwards, and the simple fact that licenses are given at city hall and marriages are performed by judges proves it. Marriage is a civil procedure, not a religious one. In all faiths, it is an agreement between two individuals (and/or their families, in the old days) to join their lives and property. A religious ceremony often follows, but is not necessary. The Christian church didn't even get into the marriage business for over a thousand years after Christ. Before that, at most you'd get a blessing on the church steps. It was far from being the sacrament it is now. Today, a marriage must first be allowed by the civil authority (in the form of granting the marriage license) - most jurisdictions then allow - not require, but allow - a religious official to perform a ceremony. It doesn't have to be a Christian religious official, of course, because all other religions have the right to perform marriages as well. In all jurisdictions, there are also provisions for civil authorities to perform marriages: mayors, judges, justices of the peace, etc. In some jurisdictions, you don't even need anyone else to perform a ceremony - the couple is deemed to have married by filling out the paperwork and deciding that they are married. In other words, it is the state that decides when one is married, not the church. Quite frankly, marriage should be restored to its former, traditional (yes, traditional!) status as a civil contract and churches should stay out of it. Or use the word "marriage" for the civil state, and choose another word for those who decide to have a religious ceremony after a civil one. After all, what difference does a word make?
How Do Most Inter-Racial Couples Feel About The Gay Marriage Argument?
From Politics Forum:How do most inter-racial couples feel about the gay marriage argument? Making gay marriage illegal is being compared to making inter-racial marriages illegal. How can we track how inter-racial couples feel about this? And if by inter-racial, we mean two people of the following races: White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc., does that mean that only inter-racial couples op ions matter, or do we consider the opinions of all the races, all at the same time?
Answer: I think all white women should be forced to marry back men, as reparations
If Part Of The Anti-Gay Marriage Argument Is That Gays Cannot Reproduce, Why Not Ban Old People Marriage?
From Religion & Spirituality Forum:If part of the anti-gay marriage argument is that gays cannot reproduce, why not ban old people marriage? How come the anti-gay marriage people aren't trying to ban old people marriage, or marriage between a man and a woman who had ovarian cancer and can no longer have children? Why are they so concerned about the reproduction issue when it comes to gays but not when it comes to straight people?
Answer: Or infertile marriage. I can't have kids, so am I not allowed to marry?
Why Do Conservatives Use The Most People Oppose The Right To Gay Marriage Argument?
From Politics Forum:Why do conservatives use the most people oppose the right to gay marriage argument? Most people in America also used to oppose interracial marriage. Not surprisingly, most of this opposition came from the christian conservatives (like Jerry Falwell) of the time. They pointed to the story of Ham and the tower of Babel from the Bible to opposite. I say let people make up their own minds. People should be free to do what they want unless it interferes with the rights of others. People of the same sex marrying does not interfere with the rights of heterosexuals to marry. And why did it take Alabama until the year 2000 for it to finally eliminate it's racist laws against interracial marriage? Even then, a size able minority (40%) voted to keep them. Seems like they sure love their "traditional" values down there. http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/11/07/alabama.interracial/ Mother, Read about the women's right movement. Christian conservatives of the time believed nothing could be more "anti-biblical" then given women equal rights. If people didn't "rock the boat" nothing in this country would have ever changed. We'd still have slavery and women and minorities would still be second class citizens. Mother, Bob Jones is a christian university. Up until 2000 they had rules banning interracial dating. Scott, I think the reason divorces skyrocketed is because laws on divorce were considerably weakened in several states. Suddenly, it was much easier to get divorces and people who put up with people they could not stand finally had an easy way out. Not saying that is right and wrong. Just saying that is what happened. Suprisingly for cons, the state with the least divorces is Massachusetts. If you read up on this you will find that even christian conservative organizations found that atheist/agnostics had the least divorces, followed by mainline Christians, and last with the most divorces were fundamentalist/evangelical Christians. Mike, We have what is called a liberal democracy. The majority can't just outvote the minority and take their rights away. The constitution guarantees everybody basic rights. Billy, You are mistaken. Most people do approve of interracial marriage today and gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts.
Answer: Actually the people in every state have banned gay marriage. Not just the red states, but the blue states too. Yes, Mass and NJ now allow gay marriage, but only because the Courts made them, the people certainly didn't make it legal. And in Mass, the state legislature has already had the first reading and vote on a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. So it would seem, that's its not a conservative only issue after all. So will your next post rant about those inbred red neck liberal's in Mass making gay marriage illegal ???
