What Are Some Of The Female Characters' Names In J.D. Salinger'S Works?

From Books & Authors Forum:

What are some of the female characters' names in J.D. Salinger's works? I know J.D. Salinger had a strong attraction for young women and included many females in his works. What are some of the female characters he wrote about?

Answer: Sally Hayes in "Catcher in the Rye." She's, in a way, the catalyst for the entire novel, and Caulfield's affection for her, idealization of her, and inability to reconnect with her is one of the central elements of his character. Also, the prostitute, who occupies an important place in the novel. Other than that, all I've read of Salinger (though there's not much to read) is his Nine Stories, although there are quite a few central female characters within them, including: Esmé, in "For Esmé – with Love and Squalor." A soldier remembers his meeting the young girl before he was sent to combat. Her innocence and their "relationship" allow him to spiritually survive the war. Muriel, in "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" Eloise, in "Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut" - Eloise comes to accept her life with her husband as she mourns the death of her true love who died in the war. Beatrice, in "Down at the Dinghy"

What Could Have Influenced The Writing Of The Catcher In The Rye?

From Books & Authors Forum:

What could have influenced the writing of the catcher in the rye? what was going on in the S's that could have influenced J.D Salinger in the writing of the catcher in the rye?

Answer: Well jeez, there was WWII for a start, Lil. But the character name Holden Coalfield was developed before WWII kicked off in America with Pearl Harbor. I would say that Catcher in the Rye is more autobiographical as J.D. had restrictive parents; his father had plans for his future and didn't want him to indulge too much in theatre, and his mother was apparently overprotective. Even the girl that Holden meets up with, Sally Hayes, seems to be based off of JD's old girlfriend Oona. I get the sense of teenage rebellion from Salinger himself, like a kid trapped in a mans body, he never grew up. I think the Beatnik thing would have been kicking around by then, plus Salinger got the chance to travel just a bit before the war started in Europe, which must have been something pretty special.

Something that has a bit of travelling in it too. Any answer to this will be greatly appreciated, but remember I said a fantastic book.
