Answer: It is more than likely not Orbits you need to ask for an extension, but the airline. You could try re booking the flights and then cancelling them again. Of course, you'd have to pay the penalty again, but depending on how much the value of the tickets are, it may be worth it. You'd then have another year from the date of issue.

All you really need is the airline "record locate code" or "confirmation number" or "reference code", and that should be on the receipt, or on the website's listing of your reservation. It's a 6-character code, a combination of letters and numbers, like JEFFIE. This is not the same as the reservation number or trip ID issued by Orbits. Actually, for the most part, your passport is generally sufficient; the person at the check in counter can look up your reservation using your name. You'll get your boarding pass there as well.

Only by booking the policy and selecting full protection will you received full t&c's. I would add that simply deciding not to go, is probably not a reason that would be accepted, and changing flights would be outside the policy, and you would probably need to pay a fee to the airline (not Orbitz) to change flights.
