Generally, it takes much more than one flight to earn enough points to take another one. You get points based on the mileage flown. The Southwest website quotes flight costs in either points or dollars (there's a toggle switch that defaults to dollars). Just to give you an idea of what it takes to book a flight, I got 50,000 bonus points for signing up for a Southwest credit card, and it took about half of them to book a round trip from Hartford CT to Columbus OH.
