Answer: That's a very good question. It probably is for a medicinal or nutritional reason, or to pick up fungi or bacteria. But is that 'knowledge' genetic? Do their parents or pack train them? Do they discover by experience that it helps? If you do some research, you may find out this has already been studied and understood. Each mechanism is plausible. It doesn't take too much intelligence to figure out that if your stomach is hurting, the cause and/or the fix probably have something to do with eating.
